How could it be that for five years, the public living around Lantana Airport
didn't know about this document which makes it abundantly clear that helicopters
that fly over their communities repeatedly... are not even supposed to be there
(Sheriff excepted) according to this Palm Beach County Commission document unearthed
earlier this year by LWM.
According to the PBCo Department of Airports, 'there was no need to distribute
or publish it on their NOISE ABATEMENT WEBSITE for public viewing since it was
only important for pilots to see it.' And of course these are the same pilots
that have thumbed their noses at these Procedures for five years and counting.
Recently, a request to post these Procedures on the County's NOISE ABATEMENT
SITE was made so the public could see for the first time where the helicopters
were supposed to be flying. A DOA (Department of Airports) noise abatement rep
declined the request saying "...submit that request in writing and we'll
consider it."

Helicopter buzzes home... caught on video. This is more common than anyone
would think with pilots retaliating against residents who complain
This document is THE most important document yet for the surrounding communities
of Lantana Airport who've been suffering for over a decade with a plague of
helicopter students and instructors doing maneuvers over their homes, flying
everywhere, buzzing their neighborhoods, making lot's of noise, and generally
becoming a huge nuisance and blight on their communities adding three times
the noise that small planes emit into areas that for the first half century
of the airports existence... seldom if ever saw an aircraft above their homes.
One resident snapped... "we were entitled to relief and were kept from
knowing it all these years ...and we thought we just had to accept it."
The communities around Lantana Airport have become just another casualty in
what has quickly become a world wide problem with helicopter operations near
residential areas... from Okinawa and Hawaii, to the USA all the way to London...
helicopters are quickly becoming the world's number one public nuisance.
For Lantana residents, it's the helicopter training schools that bring helicopters
over certain neighborhoods sometimes one every two minutes at low altitude ...interrupting
conversations, forcing residents to close their windows and making the peaceful
enjoyment of property... a thing of the past.
The negative image of helicopters is so pervasive that an organization of helicopter
pilots formed HAI... Helicopter Association International to combat the poor
image problem world wide. They quickly discovered that it was the way helicopter
pilots fly that offended people and so they developed instructional videos and
launched seminars to sensitize pilots to be considerate when flying over neighborhoods and communities. The full
measure of those programs is desperately needed at Lantana Airport.
Reporting on this issue will continue in a series of stories including instructional
videos as well as videos of "helicopter pilots behaving badly" from
the LWM investigation archive accumulated since December 2009.
