  COMMISSION SUBVERSION by Laurence McNamara
Posted on Tuesday, July 03, 2007 @ 08:15:01 EST by admin

Lake Worth
The citizens of Lake Worth have twice voted to require a voter referendum before the Beach property could be either sold or leased, except for a lease of 20 years or less.

In 2004, the vote was nearly unanimous: 2,162 Yes 397 No

This was the Beach Protection Amendment put on the Ballot by the entire Commission and with the 20 year exception explained by former Mayor Romano as necessary to protect the rights of the business owners to get leases on their stores.

In 2005, the Parks Protection Amendment reiterated the requirement of a voter referendum before the Beach or any park or public land could be leased or sold. It too passed by an overwhelming majority: 1,838 Yes 1,365 No

This Yes vote was in spite of a blatantly deceptive sign by Realtors and developers and their now defunct PAC which stated “Save Our Parks-Vote No on Sale of Parks Amendment.” This Charter Amendment was the result of a petition drive in which almost 3,000 signatures were gathered from you citizens.

On Tuesday, October 3, 2006, Commissioner Lowe, Burns and Vespo voted to subvert your twice expressed will by entering an agreement with the County as a prelude to a 20 year lease agreement giving a developer total control of all 19 acres of our Palm Beach Island oceanfront land. These three are violating the spirit of the law.

Commissioner Burns and Lowe were witnesses to the 20 year lease discussion in 2004 and they both know that a 20 year lease of the entire beachfront was never the intention of that Commission, or the voters, who so strongly rejected that idea in 2 separate elections.

Yet, these two, along with Commissioner Vespo, have voted to pervert your expressed will and begin the process of giving up control of our beach for 20 years.
