  New candidate for District 4
Posted on Wednesday, July 09, 2008 @ 23:39:33 EST by admin

Lake Worth

New candidate will file for District 4 Commission seat

For the past few days with the rumor mill running at full steam, LWM was told that a new candidate might run in district 4 against Dave Vespo. So after a few days of working through the grape vine …at long last, we are happy to report on the rumor. LWM contacted Rene Varela, a Lake Worth resident to verify if he intends to file for a commission seat in district 4 to which he responded… “yes! And I’m looking to bring a divided city together to address the issues.”

Rene Varela is a 39 year old MS, VMD (doctor of Veterinarian medicine who also holds a masters degree in science) who believes in “People Powered Politics,” and accountability for elected and public officials. “Change can only come through consensus and transparency,” he says noting that the obligation of any public servant is to mend divisions within the city. “So I will be reaching out to bridge these divisions that's why I need to get an early start.”

Rene will be our guest in an upcoming interview that will be announced early next week.

LWM requested some photos of his work... here are a few he sent.  We intend to discuss some of this in the interview but these are shots taken near the panhandle of Florida where little was previously known about the various species of Dolphins in the area.  Specifially, blood health, genetic analysis, diet, effects of red tides (potentially toxic to marine mammals), and migration were of interest and Rene was the VMD working for NOAA on the project.  Part of the study was to determine the status of certain prey species, and to cover the possible effects of over fishing, sewage dumping, ocean warming and over nutrifying on Dolphin populations.  In the pics below and on the front page, Dolphins were examined, measured, tagged and radio transmitters installed.  This makes further monitoring much easier and can be done primarily by boat without having to haul the dolphins out of the water again.

Interesting that Dolphins are air breathers and with careful handling are quite calm (heart rates measured on deck show no rate increase) when they are being examined out of the water.  The key is to keep their skin wet so they can shed heat.

From what I hear, he is truly a remarkable person--well educated, thoughtful, analytical, a people person and someone who cares deeply about the city. That is why he moved here. A lot of people say they moved here because of the beach. He moved here for the city in general. Can't wait to hear more about him.

I've been checking around and everyone has great things to say about him. He is a candidate for all sides in this city. That's what we need.

Impressive credentials for sure. Vespo may have his hands full trying to keep his position against Rene Varela if the election was based on these qualifications alone. But I need to know more, alot more. Has Rene been involved with the city, is he known by the public? How long has he been a resident of Lake Worth? The link that Lynn lists above is from March of 07, 16 months ago. What has he been doing since?

What I found out by researching him has turned up so little that I still know nothing of the man but what's listed on here. I also found Mr. Varela is a big time Obama supporter, (not that there is a single thing wrong with that) and I find it hard to believe that anyone involved with the Democrat Club would be unaware of his qualifications or his intentions of running.

He had an Obama event scheduled at his house on June 28th, I am sure his plans for running were discussed among some of you at that time.

Well, there goes my inquisitive nature on all politicians, sorry about that.

He bought a home on S. Palmway ABOUT 11 MONTHS AGO AND MADE A BIG INVESTMENT IN THIS CITY. He is a Florida native, born and raised, his family having come from Cuba. He is a marine doctor. Interesting. Smart as a whip. This is all I have learned so far. You don't have to be a long time resident to be up on the issues or help to make a difference. He comes with no baggage. That is a big plus.

The first I learned that he was interested in serving the city was when he applied for the CRA. He certainly never revealed his intentions, if he had any then, to anyone at the LW Democratic Club (that I know of.)

TruthMatters, we may never see a dolphin in the commission chamber, but these picture clearly shows his experience as a doctor of veterinarian medicine.

This experience would be very valuable in contributing solutions for environmental issues, wildlife issues, public health issues, and green power issues.

If you don't think that none of these issues are important, you should know that the North Pole may completely be melted sometime THIS Summer, and we need people that are enviornmentally aware more than ever.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/weather/06/27/north.pole.melting/

With that said, I believe that a person of this magnitude is more than enough to take out Vespo and put Mayor Clemens in check once in for all.

Does anyone know Dr. Varela's views on the following questions/issues:

1. What is their/his/her educational background/levels/university degrees; experience to do the job; and their spirituality/religion/church they attend in the area--spirituality is very important to me, we need a community of spirit here, we seem to be lacking in this now. Does the candidate pray?

2. Stand on illegal immigration, what they will do and work for, will they uphold our laws in this city?

3. What will they do about all the blight and crime in our city, especially in the west and south of the city? Their plan, not just talk and empty promises like we have gotten before so many times. Substance and action plans that are measurable.

4. Views and stand on our CRA.

5. Views on the beach, water, utilities, etc. Views on the hot topics.

6. Views on high rentals and too many rentals in this city, goal for more single family homes, getting this city cleaned up. Their ways for creating a caring community.

7. Is he gay-friendly and feel gays deserve all the same rights, will he still support the Gay Pride Fest/Parade and flying the gay flag and COMPASS here in LW.

These are just a few items that I see as important in this upcoming election and in the near future. I would like all candidates to answer these few questions, I am curious to know their answers, especially the spirituality one. I have seen now in my travels/living around the world and country over the years that communities that have high levels of spirituality have good, loving and caring people and communities with less crime. My vote will likely depend on all these questions. I am leaning toward not voting for any incumbents. Curious to know. Thanks!

All this will be coming at a future date on a Live Interview or Video interview on LWM. His resume will be posted as soon as the Admin gets time to upload to the server.

All candidates have been afforded this opportunity to appear and LWMedia says that it hopes they will take advantage of this service as this election progresses.

This background info is really good and that he cares for the environment. Don't know about anyone else here but I like knowing what values (if any) these candidates have and where they came from. it looks like this man cares which is sharply contrasted to the candidate that ran a sordid and vulgar website that made us all look bad. This man seems like he might actually be interested in making a better Lake Worth. I will be watching for an appearance.
