Coakley Platform Specifics

Coakley Platform Specifics

Electric Utility – roll 26% tax back to 10% or less like other cities… by forcing the city to be responsible for its own operation instead of no accountability for incurring millions in waste every year and then charging it off on residents by raising their utility bills. The current system encourages waste and that’s what corruption wants so they can “grab the cash and pass it on to their friends.” Plan includes the immediate removal of the utility director and plant manager who have deliberately racked up millions in waste.

Water Utility – water rates must be scaled back, not increased 85% over the next few years. A large part of the upward pressure on rates is again… waste. The RO (Reverse Osmosis Water filtration system) is a good idea but has been badly managed by this commission.

Against all sound reason, they allowed an exclusive bidder to set the price costing taxpayers minimum 5 million extra and probably much more. Against all good reason, they failed to solicit other cities interest in a regional RO plant so we could benefit by a much greater economy of scale. They also bungled the process of terminating the contract with the county by waiting 7 months to speak with the county commission after I had spoken with Karen Marcus in July of 2008 and pleaded with Jo Ann Golden to go NOW (in July) to speak to the county and build a consensus which I had started. Water department staff should be reviewed and some removals implemented.

Utility in general – 3.4 billion in federal funds will be made available to upgrade the power grid. It isn’t exactly certain how much Lake Worth would qualify for.

Strong Mayor – I support this as a major component of the solution to gridlock and factionalizing of the city into two warring groups for political control. It will return Lake Worth to a system of checks and balances like our constitutional government. It means that the person running your city is directly responsible to you and instead of changing the commission majority to replace a city manager… you only have to vote out one person… the one responsible for how your city is run.

Democracy Project – the key for better government. All successful corporations have a feedback mechanism for quality control, the Democracy Project is Quality Control for government.

By continually polling public opinion on issues a number of positive changes can occur: First, trusted government that results from government LISTENING to the people. And it gives people a voice in THEIR government and it’s a means of holding elected and appointed officials accountable… something new to Lake Worth.

The Democracy Project is the first of its kind anywhere in the US with a secure polling system for an accurate assessment of the public will on all issues.

Beach – the completion of the Casino building. A restoration of the 1922 appearance.

And, a lot of money is about to be wasted if one of the key features of our beach that makes it desirable and unique is removed and that is our beachfront parking. Commissioners, none of whom USE the beach, decided to gut this convenient parking to one third of its present capacity by adding a small patch of green.

Lake Worth Mall - Business community – no one has a simple solution to encouraging a thriving business community. Talking about it is just more of what politicians always talk about and then do nothing to achieve.

Of course the Park of Commerce should be moved forward and who better to get the job done than someone with a track record of getting things done. But the Lake Worth Mall is a simple solution to giving our business community an advantage. It is literally a shopping mall on line and could include a list of inventory, daily or weekly specials. This interactive Mall would keep residents shopping in Lake Worth, and give Lake Worth businesses the prestige of having city support in a new and innovative way to bring their businesses to the world market.

60 day Moratorium – this would suspend all unnecessary decision making while the commission goes out to the people and solicits from a series of town meetings… exactly how the people think that government can better serve them. This is government LISTENING.
